Windows 8 release date announced - Northern NJ Small Business IT Consulting

Microsoft Windows is on its way October 26th, 2012. This just happens to coincide with the release date of their Surface tablet as well as the opening day of their Holiday Stores.

Let the controversy begin!

There’s been plenty of talk about Windows 8 and much of it has been centered around the user interface – specifically the lack of a START button. Designed for use on SmartPhones and tablets, Windows 8 sports the new Metro (well, it’s not Metro anymore but I don’t want to get into that discussion) interface. On either of those devices I think it’s a pretty solid interface.  But on a desktop or laptop it just doesn’t work.

Will Microsoft address this and put the START button back in? Maybe. I think that the market is going to ignore Windows 8 as a desktop operating system. If that happens I imagine Microsoft might, might, give some thought to it. Most likely, we will have to wait for Windows 9 or whatever they’re going to call it much like Vista was pretty much skipped over for Windows 7.

Is Windows 8 ready?

More concerning than the lack of a START button – and that’s a big concern – is the fact that some folks are claiming that Windows 8 is being launched before it is completely ready.

An article in Newsday claims that Intel CEO Paul Otellini told employees that Windows 8 is being released before it’s fully ready and that improvements still need to be made.

Microsoft says that “with over 16 million active preview participants, Windows 8 is the most tested, reviewed and ready operating system in Microsoft’s history”.

Reality

Yes, Windows 8 lacks a START button and the user interface is pretty bad. Even if we eventually come to love it there will be a learning curve. Navigating the new desktop is going to take a little getting used to.

I think 8 will catch on with users of tablets and Windows SmartPhones, but I think that unless Microsoft does something about the usability issues IT departments and small businesses are going to stick with Windows 7 for a while.

Your turn. Share your opinions on Windows 8. Do you think it will be a disaster or the best thing to happen to the PC in a long time?
